I'm a little surprised that there's been no talk about the problems with the Carling Family Band. Maybe I should have written here about this earlier. Information is a little scattered because it's mostly reported in Swedish articles, but it has also been discussed in English too, in the Facebook group "Lindy Hoppers Against Rape Culture". I'll give the information I know below, and if you want more, please ask, I will put you in touch with others who know more than I do.
Several members of the Carling Family Band are extremely racist, in particular Hans, Max, and Ulf Carling, though also it seems other members of the family either don't see a problem or pretend it doesn't exist.
Hans was a leading member of the Swedish neo nazi movement in the 90s. The band has created music for the neo nazi groups.
More recently, Ulf and Max led a protest against refugee *children* settling in their town, in which Max flung about his clarinet like a weapon and barricaded the school door.
The band has been tagged in conversations and they have left the discussion, meaning they choose not to comment, except for Gunhild who has said her music is "apolitical" and that she hasn't inherited any of their political views and that they have lively discussions since they have differing opinions.
Gunhild said to several people in Sweden that she would not play with Hans, Max or Ulf in Sweden. Not only has she since played with them in Sweden, but also from conversations I have had, it seems that she has recommended to at least one event in Asia that they hire Max.

This became a big deal in Sweden. You may have noticed that they did not play at Snowball this year, and they are not going to be playing this year at Herrang (the first year I can remember that they are not invited to play). I have heard from others that it is because of the racism of the band members, especially Max, Hans, and Ulf's.
I am personally not going to support any event that brings them in. Some of these events hired them before they knew about this. I hope people going to those events will pressure the organizers to change their band, even if it's difficult to do last minute. Or, send a clear message to the organizers, and demand a refund on your event pass because you refuse to support such a racist band.

There was a blog post with information that has since been taken down because the author of it was getting that article coming up when people googled his name and he was uncomfortable with that being the first thing people saw of him. I have the text if you want me to send it to you. Here is just one quote:
"For the last few days, there have been a lot of discussions ... concerning protests against a planned home for refugee children. According to the article, the main instigator was the Carling Family band member Max Carling, and it is also mentioned that Ulf Carling showed up and tried to provoke the journalist present to cover the story. Local politician Péter Kovács met with Max Carling and some other protesters to discuss the situation and is afterwards quoted saying that in 13 years as a politician, he has never met people with such xenophobic views. When a Swing dancer later called up said politician to ask if the news reporting was accurate, he emphasised that the reporting has been completely accurate."
There have apparently also been discussions in the Facebook group Stockholm Lindy Network.
I'm sharing this now because I heard that there's an event in Korea now who have invited them...? I've been noticing there are a lot of events in Asia bringing them in in the last year. Please, let's not support neo-nazis and racist people. Clearly, based on their actions and their performance at Frankie 100, they would think Koreans are lesser/worse people than they are. Why support this?
