Before dancing, a female asked if I lead. I said yes and asked her why she asked that question, out of curiosity. She explained that it's a general way to ask to dance in DC. Then I understood that if we know each other on regular social dances, you don't have to, but in events like this, you need to clarify first. That totally makes sense. Actually, I've seen a guy both leading and following, and he asked me to dance later. I also wanted to follow, so I asked him if he also leads, but he said that he prefers to follow. It's all about respect.

어떤 여자분이 춤을 권하면서 리더냐고 물었다. 남자 팔뤄와 여자 리더가 많이 늘어나고, 성별과 춤에서의 역할에 대한 이슈가 있는건 알았지만 이런 질문은 처음이라 이유를 물었다. 설명하길 워싱턴에서는 이런 식으로 춤을 권하는 것이 일반적이란다. 하긴 이런 행사에서는 상대방이 춤추는 걸 보지 않고선, 아니 봤다고 하더라도 먼저 확인하는게 맞을거다. 실제로 리딩가 팔뤄잉을 모두 하는 남자를 하나 봤는데 나중에 나에게 춤을 권했다. 나도 팔뤄잉을 해보고 싶어서 리딩도 하냐고 물었지만, 그는 약간 난처한 표정을 짓더니 팔뤄잉이 더 좋다고 했다. 결국 소셜댄스는 상대방에 대한 존중이 우선이다.
